The Nation's Medical Research Agency
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the United States' primary medical research agency, and the largest source of funding for medical research in the world. It is organized under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and is comprised of 27 separate Institutes and Centers of research. As a government agency, it is responsive to Congressional legislation to set research priorities for its approximate 30 billion dollars of annual research funding awarded to thousands of scientists at universities and research institutions globally.
